Open & ventilated cladding

DuPont™ Tyvek® UV Facade, which has been specifically designed to meet the needs of open and ventilated cladding constructions, is, to date, the only sheet material known to bear the CE mark in accordance with EN 13859-2. According to this standard, the material must be tested in the laboratory by permanently exposing it to UV radiation for 5,000 hours (the equivalent of almost seven months). Even after such rigorous age testing, DuPont™ Tyvek® UV Facade was found to remain fully functional, retaining more than 90% of its residual strength and 80% of its ductility.

An attractive, open-jointed wood-panel façade is used for the  majority of the sports hotel’s external walls. “The adoption of one centimetre- wide open joints in the façade meant that the protective membrane  installed behind it would be exposed to UV radiation, potentially compromising its long-term  performance,” explains Harald Lauvland Knutsen from building   contractor Kruse Smith AS (Kristiansand, Norway) (...) This required us to find a  material that could meet our extremely high UV resistance  requirements.”

The project created 5,500 sq feet of stylish accommodation and facilities including a brasserie, bar, spa and gym. “As Aberdeen is a city mainly built from granite,” explains project architect Kenny Stephen (CuriousArchitecture), “it was a planning requirement that we used granite cladding on the new extension. And because it was a rainscreen system, it was important we chose a reliable product that could also deal with exposure to UV light.”
